The IOC approved cricket for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles on Friday, said Thomas Bach, president of the IOC.
“The Los Angeles Committee suggested five games that could be part of the Los Angeles Olympics. Cricket is one of them. “Tomorrow’s meeting of the Executive Board (EB) will talk about it,” said Kit McConnell, Sports Director of the International Olympic Committee.
After 128 years, the organizers of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles said on Monday that cricket should be added to the games. Cricket first appeared in the Olympics in the 1900 Paris Games.
History of Cricket in the Olympics
Cricket has an interesting past in the Olympics. At one point, the sport was part of the Olympics in the early 1900s. In the Paris Games of 1900, a team from Great Britain played against a team from France in the first Olympic game of cricket. It took two days, and Great Britain won, but not many people paid much attention to the game.
In 1900, in Antwerp, Belgium, cricket made one more showing in the Olympics. This time, there were only two teams: one from France and one from Great Britain. With a single-inning match played over three days, the structure was a little different. Great Britain won once more.
Cricket was not part of the normal Olympic schedule after the 1900 games. Several things, such as a lack of interest from around the world and the need to standardize rules, kept cricket out of the Olympics. But nowadays, cricket become a very popular game, and people want it to be a part of the Olympics. So, finally, the authorities decided that cricket would be a part of the Olympics.
There will also be flag football, baseball/softball, hockey, and squash at the 2028 Olympics. The IOC chose the Games during an executive meeting led by President Thomas Bach after the Los Angeles Organizing Committee made their case.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) wants to limit the number of athletes to 10,500. The International Cricket Council (ICC) stated that there should be six teams in each of the men’s and women’s events. The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles could see it played in the T20 version.
The last Cricket match Played In the Olympics
Test games used to last five days, but the match at the Paris Olympics was over in just two. The other thing is that both teams had 12 players, not 11. The game took place on August 19 and 20, 1900. When we talk about the game, Great Britain went first and got 117 runs. Frederick Cumming got the most runs with 38. England’s William Anderson got four wickets. But Attrill, Arthur McEvoy, and Douglas Robinson, the other three bowlers, each took two wickets.
The French team that came to bat did not play Frederic Christian, and the whole team was out for 78 runs. Christiaan had got seven wickets. Based on the first game, Britain had a 39-run lead. Britain called off its second game at 145 runs on the second day of the match, setting France a goal of 185 runs. The French batters couldn’t get any runs off of the British bowlers, and the whole team was out after 26 runs. Britain beat India by 158 runs.
After 24 years, cricket is now part of the Commonwealth Games.
Men’s and women’s cricket were both played at the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, last year. They finally did this after 24 years when cricket joined the Commonwealth. Men’s ODI play got a spot in the Commonwealth Games earlier in 1998. In the Commonwealth Games last year, the gold medal went to the Australian cricket team, and the silver medal went to Team India.
